I love this. It says so much in so few words and the last part really makes me smile. I can imagine that comical expression... I'm impressed by your ability to make such a common little scrounger sound quite beautiful. :)

Thank you for the response! I'm making a conscious effort to devote a few minutes at work to observing.

wow- great questions. I think it takes discipline to turn off that part of the mind. I also find that small stone observing happens easiest when I'm relaxed, and takes more effort if I'm tied up working. UNLESS- I'm SO into my work that I'm lost in it ;)

If I'm working (in my head thinking hard), i find it tough to just stop thinking & rest. Observing is resting for me; just stopping to look around, asking what's going on around me right now, to be present with my senses instead of my thinking head.
To help me write everyday, I've given myself permission to write whatever length pieces- but they have to be observations in the moment. (I've decided this is the most important part of the exercise for me...) So I'm observing friends, conversations, whatever is going on, even while working. (like today's piece) .
I like your writing!!

Thank you, Tammy. I was thinking about what earns a plant the designation of "weed." One of our favorite plants in our flowerbed is purslane, which is considered a very noxious weed, but it is a beautiful little flower if it's growing where you want it. It really comes down to whether a plant was invited, and whether it can be controlled.

It began to remind me of several refugee situations around the world, and the eradication methods are too often frighteningly similar.

The leaf may only have been a random stop for some passing insect. But it's the hottest summer we've had here in 30 years, and this oak tree isn't quite mature yet. It may not be so dire but the situation bears watching.
